Summary

The establishment of a museum in Changgyeonggung Palace in 1909 was a significant event in Korean art history, and this study explores the formation of the museum’s Buddhist art collection and its historical implications. The entry of Buddhist objects into the palace, despite the prohibition of Buddhist temples within the capital, demonstrates a shift in the royal court’s relationship with Buddhist icons. Through examining the museum’s collection, this research traces the recontextualization of religious icons into art objects and the historical context behind the categorization of “Buddhist statues.”
