Summary

This paper argues that fostering citizenship in a pluralistic democratic society requires restoring distorted self-relationships caused by competitive culture and emphasizing the educational significance of the ‘desire for recognition of others.’ Based on Honneth’s recognition theory, the study analyzes the relationship between self-respect and self-esteem, and reinterprets Rousseau’s pedagogy to explore the positive functions of the desire for recognition of others. It proposes a direction for democratic citizenship education by conceptually distinguishing between self-esteem and self-respect.
