Summary

This study evaluated the effect of health insurance coverage expansion for cancer patients on equity in healthcare utilization and catastrophic expenditure using a difference-in-differences analysis. The results showed that reducing cost-sharing for cancer patients (from 10% to 5%) did not significantly affect equity in healthcare utilization or the probability of catastrophic expenditures. These findings contrast with previous research and suggest that high out-of-pocket payments for non-covered services limit the impact of cost-sharing reductions on the total financial burden on patients.
