This study explores the uses and meanings of ‘ppwuri’ (roots) through an analysis of a Korean written corpus. The analysis reveals that ‘ppwuri’ extends beyond its basic meaning of plant roots to encompass abstract meanings such as origin, source, basis, and cause, grounded in the conceptual metaphor viewing abstract notions as plant roots. This research suggests a corpus-based cognitive approach is useful for characterizing diverse meanings in written texts.
