Summary

This study analyzes the representation of the ‘new woman’ in the works of female writers Lee Sun-hee, Park Hwa-seong, and Kang Kyung-ae in the 1930s. The writers depicted the new woman differently – as subjects of enlightenment, individuals focused on desire, or objects of ridicule – reflecting the social context of the colonial era and the prevailing patriarchal culture. Particularly, bourgeois new women tended to focus on personal desires and inner selves rather than the external world.
