Summary

This study investigated the effect of student background characteristics on their English scores on the NAEA (National Assessment of Educational Achievement). The results showed that ‘understanding in English class’ was most strongly correlated with NAEA scores, and predictive power varied across school levels. Specifically, the predictive power of ‘time spent on private tutoring’ decreased with higher school levels, while that of ‘self-study time’ increased.
