Summary

This study proposes a design method for warning thresholds of active safety systems based on a performance-based approach considering driver behavior. The core idea is to select a warning threshold that maximizes positive consequences while minimizing negative ones, considering both positive and negative effects of warnings. Using a lane departure warning system as an example, the usefulness of the performance-based approach is demonstrated, and a quantitative method to include human factors in designing active safety systems is provided.
