Summary
This study investigates the enactment of positive politeness strategies in request discourse by international undergraduate students learning Korean as a second language, and compares their strategies with those of native Korean speakers. The results show that international students intentionally use positive politeness strategies to mitigate threats to the receiver’s positive face in order to achieve the goal of a request, which is a universal communicative strategy rather than a specific cultural aspect.
