Summary

This study examines the coordinates of film history in the 1940s and the meaning of ‘artistic merit and commercialism’ through Im Hwa’s film theory. Im Hwa posited ‘artistic merit and commercialism’ as dialectical opposites, overlapping them with the dialectic of ‘national film and Joseon film’ to derive the category of “artistic character of Joseon film.” Furthermore, it presents a critical view of the logic of resolution within the imperial project and abstract notions.
