Summary

This study argues that multicultural research in Korea fails to adequately represent the specific characteristics of Korean multicultural society and the agency of immigrant women due to the researchers’ outsider perspectives and the uncritical application of Western theories. The analysis revealed characteristics and limitations such as the objectification of immigrant women and their children, a lack of attention to immigration types and contexts, neglect of regional variables, and overlooking intra-group diversity. These limitations stem from the unique context of Korean society and the conventional practices of Korean social science, and the study suggests the need for an ‘endogenous’ concept and approach to overcome them.
