Summary

This study examined the mediating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between employment and depression in the elderly, and identified gender differences in the pathway. The results showed that self-esteem mediates the relationship between employment and depression, with complete mediation for elderly men and partial mediation for elderly women. These findings suggest that the impact of employment on depression may differ by gender in older adulthood, but that improving self-esteem can lower depression levels.
