Summary

This study analyzed the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) along the Korean Peninsula from the late 14th to the early 19th century based on the Joseon Wangjo Sillok records. The analysis revealed a total of 81 HAB events in the South Sea, East Sea, and West Sea, with a higher frequency in the Gyeongsang Province. The occurrence of HABs was concentrated from April to September, especially in August, and cases of human casualties due to shellfish consumption and fisheries damage were also identified.
