This study aims to demonstrate the importance of translating slang and vulgar expressions in original novels into target text equivalents with corresponding levels of formality. A comparative analysis of word formality levels between source and target texts revealed that slang tends to be translated with lower formality or omitted, leading to a reduction in stylistic effects and negative emotional values. Therefore, translation considering the formality level of slang is necessary to maintain the linguistic functions of the original text.
