This study argues that the ‘pictorial quality of poetry’ in Kim Kirim’s poetic theory was not merely a beautiful image but a starting point for capturing the realities of the times and providing an opportunity for criticizing civilization. Kim Kirim sought to open up the possibility of criticizing reality through the universality of poetry and pursued a revolutionary attempt to break down the boundaries between consciousness and unconsciousness through images. He also criticized sentimentalism, pointing out a regressive attitude that fails to see the present.
