Summary

This study analyzed the current status of ‘free inquiry’ implementation in middle school science classrooms through teacher surveys and student interviews, following its introduction in the 2007 and 2009 revised science curricula. The results showed a decreasing trend in the operation rate of ‘free inquiry,’ but positive effects on students’ scientific interest and self-directed learning ability. Effective implementation of ‘free inquiry’ requires the development of guidance materials, increased operating time, and personnel support.
