Summary

This study analyzes the strategic behavior of debtors and creditors in a situation of debt overhang caused by increasing household debt, and seeks to improve the personal debt restructuring system. Empirical analysis using game theory and survival analysis reveals that, in Korea with a high proportion of multiple debtors, the possibility of coordination failure is high, which could lead to mortgage foreclosures and economic recession.
