Summary

This study re-examines Buddhism during the reign of King Uija through Gyeongheung, revealing his proficiency in Sanskrit and his efforts to emphasize and spread the Maitreya faith throughout Baekje society. Furthermore, Gyeongheung’s interest in Confucianism and advocacy for a Buddhist re-theory led to criticism of King Uija’s Buddhist policies, which is presented as being related to the fall of Baekje.
