Summary

This study investigates how the dilemma of two minds is raised and resolved in Zhu Xi's self-cultivation theory. Zhu Xi raised the issue of the dilemma of two minds to criticize existing self-cultivation theories, but his own theory also needed to be saved from this problem. The intervention of practical will is necessary to combine perception and presiding in moral practice, and this effort ultimately functioned as a mechanism justifying dependence on external authority.
