Summary

This study explains a short history of German nationality laws from the foundation of the German Empire to the fall of Nazi Germany. The legal system of the German Empire was based on Prussian law, with the 1842 Prussian nationality law introducing Jus sanguinis. Under the Nazi regime, the 1913 German nationality law was altered, and the Nuremberg Laws again divided German citizenship, categorizing Jews as second-class citizens.
