This study analyzes and evaluates the three debates – the developmental state model, the post-developmental state, and alternative models – centered around the Korean development model debate. The 1997-98 foreign exchange crisis revealed the limitations of the developmental state model and led to a transition to a neoliberal system, and discussions on the future Korean development model are focused on the regulatory state model. The author proposes a regulatory state model as a realistic alternative to address the problems of the neoliberal system and deepening economic inequality.
