In the 1970s, national policy films and popular films were more complementary than oppositional, generated from a common ground of the nation-state's cultural imagination under the Yushin regime aimed at nation-building. National policy films exerted influence on popular films through legal and institutional support, and gained flexibility by absorbing the grammar of popular films. The Paldo Gangsan series and the Yalkae series were mutually related in terms of mobilizing nationalistic ideology through cheerfulness, spectacular idealization, and narrative patterns.
