Summary

This study investigated the economic, social, and cultural factors influencing changes in the thanatological views of Korean patients with terminal cancer, and explored the criteria for a “good death” as perceived by patients and their families. A good death was defined by factors such as access to treatment without financial hardship, dying at home, spending time with loved ones, a painless death, and maintaining quality of life, but variables like life expectancy, medical costs, and Confucian culture could hinder achieving a good death. These findings contribute to the foundation of Korean thanatology and hold significance for comparative studies with Japan.
