Summary

This study analyzed hedging expressions in the remarks of the presidential candidates’ debate. Hedging expressions are divided into reserved judgment on the proposition and mitigation/enhancement of illocutionary force, and are used as a strategy for smooth communication in debates. In particular, double negation, although a passive expression, can convey the speaker’s strong will.
