This study analyzes the essence of the national history textbook controversy as a problem of the textbook system itself, rather than a matter of historical distortion, from an educational perspective. It explores the problems of the national textbook system in terms of teachers' academic freedom, students' and parents' educational choices, and the political neutrality of education, and emphasizes the need for discussion on a desirable textbook system in the future.
