This paper reviews research trends on drifting in the East Asian seas during the premodern period and presents future challenges. With increasing interest in ‘islands and seas’, new sources on drifting are being discovered, and researchers in East Asia are expanding the scope of research based on sources stored in their respective countries. Future research should involve compiling a comprehensive list of drifting records in East Asian countries and analyzing drifting processes and repatriation itineraries through the declassification of related materials.
