Summary

This article analyzes “neutralized masculinity” in Korean novels through the perspective of a composite narrator. Focusing on Kim Yu-jeong’s “Sad Story” and Kim Kwang-ju’s “Bad Night,” it explores the characteristics of masculinity in the colonial period and post-liberation era, discovering a unique masculine consciousness that excludes sexual awareness despite the presence of sexual material as a backdrop. It argues that this represents a historical resistance within Korean society, separate from the establishment of national subjectivity.
