Summary

This study analyzed 20 overseas studies that verified the effectiveness of functional communication training (FCT) using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results showed that most studies used single-subject research methods, with reductions in problem behaviors and increases in appropriate communication behaviors as main dependent variables. Functional behavioral assessment before FCT intervention is essential, and interventions were conducted in various settings (separated rooms, homes, classrooms) with the participation of experts, parents, and teachers.
