Summary

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by decreased bone mass and increased fracture risk, resulting from an imbalance between osteoblast bone formation and osteoclast bone resorption. Postmenopausal women are at higher risk of osteoporosis due to estrogen deficiency, and research on phytoestrogen with estrogen-like activity is actively underway as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy with its side effects. This study reviews previous research on the roles of estrogen and phytoestrogen in bone metabolism.
