This study analyzes poems created by Chinese people in Northeast China (centered in Dalian) in the 1920s, revealing that the image of Manchuria was already formed before the establishment of Manchukuo by Japan. At that time, people in the Northeast region developed a sense of separation from China-centered China due to political turmoil and the modernization of border cities, which manifested as a ‘mental border’ in their works. It emphasizes that Manchukuo was founded and the image of Manchuria was created through Japanese invasion within this unique Northeast consciousness.
