Summary

This paper challenges the prevailing interpretation of Robinson Crusoe as an early embodiment of economic individualism, instead analyzing him as a figure afflicted by the negative forces of capitalism. Crusoe, while appearing to champion rationality, is depicted as a contradictory character suffering from various forms of psychosis, driven by a desire to possess yet haunted by a fear of loss, material insecurity, and mental persecution. Thus, Robinson Crusoe can be viewed as a multi-layered text portraying its hero as a victim of negative capitalistic forces despite its outward valorization of economic individualism.
