Summary

This study compared Korea with five other countries to analyze Korean students’ achievement characteristics and the effects of educational variables on PISA 2015 reading literacy. While Korean students’ reading literacy remains at a high level, the achievement gap between different student groups and between genders is increasing, and factors such as gender, ESCS, and school mean ESCS significantly influence reading achievement. Furthermore, Korean students showed lower performance in the ‘situation’ dimension, necessitating a review of reading education and further research.
