본 과목은 국제협력본부 주관으로 서울대학교 학생들의 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화하기 위해 개설한 과목으로 크게 두 부분으로 나누어져 있다. 첫째, 전반부 5회 수업 시간 동안 국내에서 진행하는 사전 강의는 학내외 유럽과 국제기구 전문가들을 초청하여 학생들에게 유럽의 역사·정치·외교·사회 현실 뿐 아니라 유럽연합(EU)을 포함한 다자협력 전반에 대한 이해를 심화시키고자 하는 내용으로 구성되어 있다. 또한 2주간 벨기에 브뤼셀에 위치한 브뤼셀자유대학교(Free University of Brussels)에서 진행할 후반부 강의는 수강생들이 벨기에에 소재한 유럽의회(European Parliament) 및 유럽집행이사회(EU Commission) 등 기구들을 방문하고 현지 전문가들의 강의를 수강함으로써 사전 강의에서 이루어진 유럽연합에 대한 이해를 심화하는 형식으로 진행될 예정이다.

이 강의에서는 문학 텍스트에 나타난 여성적 정체성을 살펴보고 분석하는 것을 주요 내용으로 한다. 강의의 전반부에서는 주로 남성작가들이 그리는 여성성을 살펴보게 되며 이때 주안점은 femme fragile, femme fatal에 맞추어져 있다. 후반부에서는 주로 여성작가들의 작품을 통하여 여성의 자의식이 성숙하면서 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 과정을 살펴본다. 이 강의에서는 이미 널리 알려진 문학작품을 읽고 각 시대, 사회, 문화에 따라 여성성이 어떻게 구성되고 재현되는가를 논의하고자 한다. 특히 모성이나 에로틱 등의 여성에 대한 전통적 담론뿐만 아니라 현대성, 도시성, 몸 등 여성성에 대한 새로운 여러 담론들이 다루어질 것이다.

이 강의는 변모하는 독일어권 국가들의 현대문화를 EU와의 관계에서 고찰하는 지역학 강의이다. 통일 이후 유럽연합의 일원으로 변모한 독일과 독일어권 국가들은 각 분야에서 새로운 모습을 보여주고 있다. 이 강의는 유럽과 독일의 정체성이라는 주제를 중심으로 유럽과 독일의 역사를 통시적으로 살펴본 후에 그중 특히 주요한 문제로 떠오르는 특정 주제들을 정해 공시적으로 집중 조명한다. 전자에서는 유럽의 공통 기본 이념을 고대로부터 고찰하며 그리스 로마의 문화, 중세 기독교, 근대 시민 민주주의 문화, 민족주의와 제국주의 등이 주요 내용을 이룬다면 후자에서는 유럽통합으로의 길, EU에서의 독일의 위상, 다문화사회문제, 독일의 정체성문제 등이 다루어질 것이다.

이 교과목은 젠더와 다문화 쟁점에 대한 수업으로, 젠더와 인종 문제를 지리학과 포스트 식민주의 맥락에서 살필 수 있도록 하는 것이다. 이주를 비롯한 국제적 이동이 젠더 정치학을 어떻게 변화시키고 있는지에 초점을 둔다. 인종과 젠더, 섹슈얼리티가 다양한 문화적, 경제적 상황에 어떻게 구성되는지, 이러한 과정에서 젠더가 다문화주의와 어떤 관련을 맺게 되는지를 살핀다. 이 교과목을 통해 수강생들은 증가하는 불안정성과 자본, 사람, 지식의 이동 속에서 여성의 이주, 이동이 어떠한 의미를 갖는지를 자신만의 관점을 통해 분석할 수 있다.

여성학(Gender Studies)은 분과학문의 경계를 넘어 학제적 연구를 지향하면서도 독자적인 연구방법과 연구주제, 접근법을 가지고 있는 독립 학문으로, 대학원생들이 구체적인 이슈에 대한 연구에 들어가기 전에 습득해야 할 기존 지식의 범위와 양이 매우 많다는 특징이 있다. 그런데도 현재 한국 대학교육에서 체계적인 여성학 전공 프로그램을 제공하는 곳이 많지 않기 때문에, 여성학을 전공하고자 하는 대학원생들은 여성학 그 자체의 전반적인 그림을 파악하기 위해서 많은 노력을 기울여야 한다. 여성학 핵심연구는 여성학협동과정에 입학한 대학원생이면 누구나 수강해야 하는 전필 과목으로서, 여성학협동과정 겸무교수님들의 협력을 통해 여성학의 역사와 정체성 및 현재 여성학의 핵심 연구 주제들에 대해 집중적으로 탐구한다.
