Summary

This study analyzed illustrations in the ‘Stimulus and Reaction’ unit of middle school science textbooks, comparing differences between textbooks and subunits based on location, type, function, and composition. The analysis revealed that illustrations were mainly presented in the body of the text, with photos frequently used in the ‘Sensory organs’ subunit and diagrams in the ‘Nervous system’ and ‘Hormones’ subunits. The study suggests enhancing the explanatory and complementary functions of illustrations, explicitly referencing them in the text, and presenting multiple illustration compositions to improve students' understanding.
