Summary

This study examines the art village phenomenon in Beijing, China during the early 1990s, focusing on the Yuanmingyuan and Dongcun art villages. ‘Mangliu’ artists sought new ways to survive as professional artists based in these two villages, each with unique characteristics contributing to the diversification of the Chinese art scene. Although forcibly demolished, the two art villages became the origin of dwelling models for other artist communities such as 798 in Beijing.
