Summary

This study explores ways to foster historical thinking skills and historical consciousness by discussing how to deal with Ilchinhoe in history education. Moving beyond the existing dichotomous narrative of pro-Japanese/anti-nationalism, it suggests understanding Ilchinhoe's activities as a process of pursuing the political and economic needs of the people, and considering its connection with the Independent Association. This can activate political debates on civic consciousness and current historical consciousness, and suggest a new direction for history education.
