Summary

This study examines the ritual culture of the Maek tribe centered on the Manbalbalja site in Tonghua, Baekdu Mountain, revealing that it is the prototype of the late Hongshan culture in the Liao River region and suggesting a new direction for research on the ancient history of Northeast Asia. In particular, the three-layered circular altar (mother-son tomb) and square altar facilities of the Manbalbalja site were constructed around 4000-3500 BC and contain the thought of Cheonjiin based on bear worship tradition and Sundo ideology.
