Summary

This study genealogically analyzed the changes in the Korean society’s view of children and the perception of early childhood competency through the evolution of the kindergarten curriculum. The competency of young children was reconstructed within the power dynamics surrounding the nation, science, and equality, and was analyzed in categories such as nurturing national talent, standard development, and equal educational opportunity. The study confirmed that the view of early childhood competency was formed by educational policies and academia, and suggested the possibility of critical reflection on current views of children and education.
