Summary

This study analyzes the family form lacking proximity and the role of technology mediating it in Park Wan-Suh’s *The Very Old Joke*. Video technology and email in the novel are used to fantastically restore absent family members or maintain appropriate family distance, exploring family autonomy and intimacy. Park Wan-Suh captures both the pain of losing a family and the pain from the family through the paradox between closeness and weakening of family ties.
