Summary

This study critically examines progressive education in the West from the late 19th century to the early 20th century based on Heydorn’s education theory. The results show that the ‘naturalism’ of progressive education may neglect the ability to analyze society, and child-centered education can be linked to capitalism and evoke an illusion of escaping reality. Therefore, educational reform should move towards enhancing students’ ability to consciously and practically confront the contradictions of reality.
