자연 탐구의 역사에서 ‘생명’만큼 자기 정체를 오랫동안 숨겨온 대상이 있을까? 생명은 무엇인지, 무엇으로부터 기인하였고 어떤 원리로 작동하는지, 그 비밀의 답은 언제나 만족스럽지 않았다. 그렇기에 더 이상 이해할 수도 규명할 수도 없는 순간 우리는 생명에게 ‘신비’라는 꼬리표를 붙여왔다. 하지만 21세기 현대과학은 눈부시게 발전했고 ‘생명’의 정체도 거의 밝혀낸 것처럼 보인다. 생명이 무엇인지를 정의하였고 DNA를 통해 생명현상을 해독하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 생명을 변형시키고 새롭게 창조해내는 시도까지 이루어지고 있기 때문이다. 그렇지만 이러한 과학의 발전은 과학만으로 답할 수 없는 질문들을 우리에게 던지고 있다. 따라서 이 강좌의 목적은 생명을 둘러싼 오늘날의 다양한 논의를 과학, 문학, 철학의 관점에서 동시에 살펴보고, 이를 통해 새롭게 직면한 생명의 문제를 함께 고민하고 그 답을 찾아보는 것에 있다. 이 강좌를 통해 수강생들은 해당주제에 관한 강의와 분반 토론에 참여하여, 새로운 과학의 발견과 성과가 가져다 줄 인류의 미래를 예측하고 그로인해 야기되는 윤리적 책임을 논의할 것이며, 이에 관한 자신의 생각을 글로 표현하게 될 것이다.
