Summary

This study investigates the use of demonstratives by Korean EFL learners in argumentative and narrative essays, comparing their usage across genres and proficiency levels, and examining the relationship with writing quality. The results showed that 'this/these' were more frequent in argumentative essays, while 'that' was prominent in narrative essays, with genre-specific usage patterns varying by proficiency. The study also found significant increases in attended demonstrative use across both genres, and unattended use in narrative essays only.
