Summary

This study historically and sociologically analyzes the origin and development of Japan’s ‘jinken-machizukuri’. Based on the historical experience of the Buraku Liberation Movement for abolishing Buraku discrimination and improving living conditions, the Burakumin have set the creation of human rights-based local communities as a major task and have been actively working since the 1990s. These activities were led by residents and contributed to raising the level of human rights implementation at the local community level through the support and cooperation of the government and local authorities.
