Summary

This study aims to overcome the limitations of the new geographical image of “Gangnam of Pyongyang,” which emerged along with the changes in Pyongyang’s urban space, and the lack of voices from Pyongyang citizens despite the expectations within South Korean society. The research found that Chung-guyok, the political, cultural, and economic center of Pyongyang, is recognized as “Gangnam of Pyongyang,” while Kwangbok Street and areas with dense single-story houses are identified as “non-Gangnam” areas. These results were derived through in-depth interviews with North Korean defectors, satellite imagery, and analysis of social network services.
