Summary

This study examines the absence of the modern girl discourse in the Zainichi Japanese society of the 1930s, and investigates their perception of modernity. Due to the characteristics of the Zainichi Japanese society and the influence of colonial media, career women were objectified, and modern girls were perceived as imitations of ‘native’ culture. In this context, waitresses were relativized in comparison to cafes in ‘native country’ or reborn as imagined spaces in detective fiction.
