This study examines the birth of masterpieces and the circulation of forgeries in the late Chosŏn dynasty art market, re-evaluating the historical significance of forgeries and their research value in art history. The emergence of art appreciation trends and forgeries in the 18th century is related to the collection and formation of the art market, and the increased demand for art due to the rise of the merchant class with economic power led to the active production of forgeries. The research analyzes the conditions of masterpieces as benchmarks for forgeries and presents the contents of evaluation and connoisseurship recorded in art treatises to distinguish between forgeries and authentic works.
