Summary

This study comparatively analyzes the UK’s referendums on EC/EU membership in 1975 and 2016, revealing that both referendums shared the commonality of the ruling parties attempting to strengthen their negotiating position and fulfill election pledges. However, both governments failed to prepare alternatives for withdrawal, and the negotiation content shifted from membership conditions to the direction of EU operations.
