This study examined the records of 12 Joseon castaways who arrived in Tottori Prefecture, Japan in 1819, and the paintings depicting them. The research analyzed a painting unveiled at the Seoul Arts Center exhibition and records related to the drift of Ahn Eui-ki’s group, decoding the Hangeul inscription within the painting and revealing that the castaway Lee Dong-baek’s original name was Lee Yong-gon. Furthermore, the study investigated 19th-century Chinese pronunciation through the Chinese characters used for the names in the painting.
