This study examined the mediating effects of social withdrawal and academic helplessness in the relationship between parenting styles and depression among middle school students. The results showed that positive parenting styles were negatively correlated with depression, social withdrawal, and academic helplessness, while negative parenting styles were positively correlated. Social withdrawal and academic helplessness mediated the relationship between parenting styles and depression, and gender differences were observed in the relationships among these variables.
