This study empirically examines the impact of the locking-in phenomenon between declining cities and surrounding areas on the economic growth gap, adopting a new economic geography perspective, and analyzes the moderating effects of industrial specialization and diversity. The results confirm that the core-periphery fixation positively affects the quantitative and qualitative gaps in economic growth, and industrial specialization and diversity further strengthen these gaps.
