Summary

This study investigates the advantages and limitations of using AI-based chatbots in English classes, proposing that voice recognition accuracy, providing feedback, employing meaning negotiation strategies, and a Learning Management System are pivotal functions of educational chatbots. Analysis of the AI chatbot EBS PengTalk and surveys with students and teachers revealed weaknesses in functions beyond voice recognition, and a tendency for student motivation to decrease due to the chatbot’s limited responses and feedback.
